Warning: Cipro, Fluoroquinolone

The FDA has revised the label on oral and injected Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including Avelox (moxifloxacin), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Cipro extended-release (ciprofloxacin extended-release), Factive (gemifloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin), and Ofloxacin (generic brand).  New recommendations include that fluoroquinolones should be used only when no other treatment options are available for uncomplicated UTI and other acute bacterial infections because the risk of serious side effects may outweigh the benefits.  See http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm513065.htm for details.
